  • While the average employed American adult works almost 40 hours a week, people in some professions tend to work more hours in a week.
  • Using US occupational employment data, we found the highest-paying jobs for employees that report working more than 45 hours a week.
  • Surgeons, physicians, and chief executives and legislators made the top of the list.

If you work far more than the next guy and get more excited about your job than about family or any other activity, you may be a workaholic.

If this sounds like you, it might be worth your precious few moments of personal time to find a job that will make up for all those extra hours you put in.

To find jobs with the biggest payoff for workaholics, we analyzed US Census data for about 478 occupations from the Minnesota Population Center's 2018 American Community Survey Integrated Public Use Microdata Series.

Based on that survey data, the average employed American adult works almost 40 hours a week and has a total earned average income — a combination of salary, business, and any other form of money earned in a year — of over $58,000.

Derrick, rotary drill, and service unit operators, who work around 59 hours a week, and surgeons, who work over 58 hours a week, are the two occupations where employees work the most hours a week on average. Of the professions that reportedly work at least 45 hours a week, the typical "workaholic" works over 48 hours a week, about eight hours more a week than the typical American.

While some may work more or less than the average depending on their employer or where they are in their career, people with the following professions report typically working an average of at least 45 hours a week and earning at least $58,000 a year.

We've also included brief descriptions of the careers based on the Department of Labor's O*NET job database. We excluded broad occupational titles from the dataset, such as physicians and military supervisors.
